BIOGRAPHY Sergio Calderón, born 1978, Spanish artist, writer and musician. In the early 1990s began working on a series of experimental short stories including The Place of Archive Events, An Extraordinary Being and Music Non Stop, during the same period he began to work with sound to create narrative non-musical compositions such as Is There Anything Outside of FM? In the late 1990s began to develop a body of work consisting of photography, digital media, video and web. During the following years he utilised the Internet as a canvas, taking advantage of the ephemeral nature of the medium, he spontaneously released his conceptual artworks as what he likes to call Internet Performances, via web, email, Aim, Blogspot, LiveJournal, and others, including Kind of Like the Noise a Tree Makes in a Forest With No One to Hear It, Explaining Why She Broke a Promise, A Catchy Theorem for a Boundary, A Crucial Plot Point, Growing Up in Public, Irreversible Light Paths, Let’s Say Goodbye Like We Said Hello and An Introverted Catholic Engineer. He moved to Barcelona in 2003, he released EP2 under the alias of HUH?, composed the soundtrack for his video installation Melanoma, released at the 5th International Festival of Contemporary Art of Barcelona. In 2007 moved to London, where he initiated the on-going project Last Space Remaining, the first iteration was released in 2013, Last Space Remaining / A. was an exhibition in which he explored architecture, space and sound. In 2022, Last Space Remaining / Chapter 0 was an experimental website with artworks, writings and films by Sergio Calderón in collaboration with the artist Céli Lee. Sergio has directed many short films and experimental videos, he composed the soundtrack for many of them, they have been screened, performed with live music and exhibited internationally. EVENT No.2, Night Breath on the Beach, STEREO and Forty Three Seconds of Happiness, and Two Seconds of Darkness to name a few. He has published two photobooks, LUCILE and QUERENCIA. In 2022, he released through a series of on-line events DARKROOMS, an on-going project initiated in 2012, including photography, artworks, short films, an essay and a one-of-a-kind artist book. Sergio’s work has appeared in many magazines and publications, he has exhibited his work in art galleries and museums internationally, including Barbican London, CCCB Barcelona and Centre Pompidou Paris. Sergio has released some of his writing in combination with his artworks. In his last book, CHOSEN LORDS, he collaborated with Céli Lee in a collection of writings and drawings. He has written two novels, The Dark Days Are the Ones I Have to Paint and On Silence, A Tale of Autumn. In 2015, Sergio formed the band MU with Céli Lee. Over the following three years, they explored different genres and recording techniques and released four instrumental albums. They did two tours in Japan and shows in Europe, London, and China in 2016 and 2017. They also made the soundtracks for some of their films and installations, of which were performed as live shows. MU hasn't been active since 2018 but the duo continued to record together as Sergio Calderón & Céli Lee and released their first album The Eternal Dice in June 2020. Their latest EP The Beginnings (Part I.) was released in December 2022. In 2015, Sergio established ENTERTAINING VIOLENCE with the artist Céli Lee, a laboratory where they release their projects. |
